History: The Swaney Memorial Library is the legacy of prominent local physician and businessman Charles T. Swaney. When Dr. Swaney died in 1950, he bequeathed funding for the construction and maintenance of a new library. In April 1954, the new Swaney Memorial Public Library opened its doors. The building continues in use to this day and now serves 4,800 residents in Hancock County.
