History: The Raleigh County Public Library was established in Beckley in 1924. 14 years later, the library moved into the newly constructed Memorial Building, where it stayed until its current facility opened in 1977. Over the years, branch libraries were added in Sophia in 1976 and in Shady Spring in 2000. The library system now serves nearly 80,000 residents in Raleigh County.
