History: Pocahontas County’s first library in Marlinton opened in 1953 in the Mayor’s office. Over the next two decades, the library was housed in several locations until moving to a home donated by the McClintic family in 1974. After that building was declared unsafe 20 years later, the McClintic family bequeathed a large amount of money for a new building and the new McClintic Public Library opened in 2000. Branch libraries opened in Green Bank in 1960, Durbin in 1968, Hillsboro in 1978, and Linwood in 1979. The Pocahontas County Library system now serves over 9,000 area residents.
