History: Library service began in Parkersburg in 1891. Originally, the library was located in a local bookstore, but soon moved to the city building, and in 1899, made its home in Parkersburg High School. In 1904, the city was awarded funding from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation for a new building, and a year later, the library moved to its new permanent home. For over 70 years, the Parkersburg Public Library was housed in the Carnegie building. Then in 1976, local, state and federal dollars were used to construct the city’s current facility on Emerson Avenue. Today, the Parkersburg-Wood County Library system includes branch libraries in South Parkersburg, Waverly and Williamstown, and the system serves more than 77,000 residents in Wood County.
