History: West Virginia’s oldest tax-supported public library opened in Wheeling in 1882. Originally, the Wheeling Public Library was located in a single room above R.J. Smith’s grocery before moving to various locations in the city over the next three decades. In 1911, a new building was constructed on Market Street and became the home of the library for more than 60 years. Changing the name to the Ohio County Public Library in 1933, the library moved to its present location in 1973. The library serves over 47,000 residents in Wheeling and Ohio County.
