History: Marion County can trace its public library to the early 1890s, when the Women’s Christian Temperance Union established a library in Fairmont. Economic difficulties closed the library twice in the 1920’s, but public dollars resurrected the library in the 1930’s and it moved to its current site in the city’s old Post office building in 1942. The Mannington Public Library opened in 1964, became a branch of the Marion County Library in the early 70’s and moved into its current home in 1973. In 1976, the Fairview branch was added, and that library moved to its current building in 1980. The Marion County library system serves a population of nearly 57,000 residents.
