National Poetry Month

Today, April 1, marks the beginning of National Poetry Month, an occasion launched by the Academy of American Poets to remind the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters. And this month, as we face an unprecedented circumstance, National Poetry Month has taken on new meaning and importance. More and more people are turning to poetry at this moment, because amid fear and uncertainty, poetry can help bring needed strength. At a time of anxiety and alarm, poetry can help bring tranquility. Poetry has the power to bring us together. The Academy of American Poets is more committed than ever to doing everything we can throughout April and beyond to bring poetry to more people. Our staff is working tirelessly from their homes to produce Poem-a-Day without interruption, because we know that hundreds of thousands of us reading a poem together each morning can be a salve in a time of social isolation. We’re reaching out to tens of thousands of teachers and parents across the country every Monday to let them know about our free online educational activities on Poets.org like Teach This Poem and our Dear Poet project. And, we’ve launched a new initiative: Shelter in Poems invites you—poets, readers, and teachers—to help us share the poems that are giving you comfort. Thank you to those who have visited Poets.org to participate. This spring will be very hard on us all and we believe that poetry is a key part of what will get us through."
