History: The Morgantown Public Library was founded in 1926 by the Morgantown Women’s Club as the Waitman Barbe Memorial Library. It spent nearly 40 years in the city’s municipal building before moving to its current facility on Spruce Street in 1964. A second floor was added to the structure in 1993, and in 2000 the library’s local history and genealogy collections were moved next door to the historic Garlow House. Branch libraries in Blacksville, the Cheat Area, and the Clinton District were added in the 70s and the Arnettesville Branch was established in 2009. Today, the system serves more than 100,000 residents in Morgantown and Monongalia County.
